KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Angry opponents of Enbridge’s line 5 pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac brought the Kalamazoo County Board meeting to a halt after they learned that a resolution opposing the pipeline had been withdrawn during an earlier meeting.
A shouting match broke out when Board Chair Dale Shugars refused to answer why it had been withdrawn. It’s their usual practice to avoid answering questions during “Citizen’s time” and the more activist environmentalists began to shout.
The Board took a recess and fled the board room. During the break the sponsor of the resolution, Commissioner Mike Quinn explained to the environmentalists and local residents that he yanked it during the afternoon session when it appeared he didn’t have the votes to pass it.
A couple of dozen supporters felt blindsided and it got quite emotional.
Quinn says he may bring back a modified resolution.
