KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Accident investigators were baffled why a Portage man made the wrong turn at the newly redesigned U.S. 131 overpass at Stadium Drive went down the wrong ramp, ended up going north in the southbound lanes and colliding head on with a pick-up on March 3rd.
Three died from the impact. Undersheriff Pali Matyas says they now have the toxicology tests back and they have their reason.
59-year-old Mark Witsaman was Super-drunk. He registered a blood alcohol count of .21, which is well over two times the legal limit.
Matyas says it closes their investigation, and should give the families some closure, or at least some answers, however they decide to deal with the deadly event.
Witsaman’s mother, 88-year-old Elma WItsaman was also killed, and so was 57-year-old Vicky Mitchell who was in the pick-up. Two other men in the truck were hospitalized and continue their recoveries.
