LANSING, MI — There will be additional empty store fronts in several Michigan cities due to Big Lots’ announcement it is closing more than 300 stores nationwide.
The discount store has been known over the years for its low prices on furniture, home goods and groceries. Store closing signs have now been posted at stores in Lansing, Okemos and Howell, telling customers that everything is now 20% off.
A quarterly report shows the retail giant is dealing with financial difficulties, coupled with ever changing consumer shopping habits, such as online buying. Big Lots CEO, Bruce Thorn, blamed the company’s failure to meet its sales goals for the mass closings. He said: “We remain focused on managing through the current economic cycle by controlling the controllables.”
