WHITE PIGEON TOWNSHIP, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A 37-year-old woman from Las Vegas had to be dramatically rescued Friday morning from her sinking minivan after it crashed into a lake southeast of White Pigeon.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police post in Marshall along with a private citizen pulled the woman from the lake near Api Gravel Road and Tomahawk Trail after the vehicle went into the water and became partially submerged at around 9:00 a.m..
Witnesses say the minivan was traveling at a high rate of speed when it went through the intersection and into the lake.
A pontoon boat was used in order to reach the vehicle and driver who was said to be responsive but very confused.
State Police say rescuers had to use a boat anchor to break out a side window and pull the woman out of the minivan which was beginning to sink.
It was reported the woman was headed to a family member’s residence in White Pigeon. She was taken to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
State Police think the unidentified woman may have suffered a medical emergency before the crash which remains under investigation.
Troopers were assisted on scene by St. Joseph County Sheriff Department, the St. Joseph County Dive Team, the White Pigeon Township Fire Department and Life Care EMS and the St. Joseph County Victim Services unit.
