BERRIEN COUNTY (WKZO AM/FM) — A Berrien County ex-con, 33-year old Bradley Penley, is being held on a million dollars bond for child abuse and assault after his fiance’s young infant had to be rushed to the hospital with broken legs, cracked ribs and skull fractures.
Penley was arrested after State Police received information about the assault at a home in Weesaw Township. The infant was initially taken to Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph, and is now listed in stable condition after being transferred to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.
Penley has been charged with child abuse and assault. He was already on probation and because he has 15-prior convictions, including assault and battery, with a history of alcohol and marijuana violations, he could get up to life in prison if convicted this time.
The police report says alcohol is a factor in this investigation.
Penley told police that he was engaged to the child’s mother and planned to adopt the baby after a spring wedding.
