OTSEGO TWP., MI (WKZO/WHTC) – What was supposed to be a fun afternoon along the Kalamazoo River in southeast Allegan County Thursday for a group of kayakers turned out to be more than they bargained for.
According to Sheriff’s Sergeant Bernard Austhof, central dispatch received a call around 3:00 p.m. that some kayakers had overturned their vessels in the Otsego area. A total of four adults and 21 children had launched from a local business when they encountered what Austhof only said was “some trouble.”
Deputies were able to spot the group in the river west of Otsego and safely recovered all of them, thanks in part to all of them wearing personal floatation devices. Several law enforcement agencies and medical personnel were on hand to assist in the rescue effort.
No names or any identification of the group of kayakers were initially made by Austhof.
