KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Hundreds turned out for the first-of-its-kind March for Science in Kalamazoo.
Motivated by a new attitude toward research and science in the White House — an attitude they don’t particularly like — scientists, researchers, students and others gathered at the flag poles on Western Michigan University campus for a brief rally, then marched downtown.
Doug Williams with the American Chemical Society, told the crowd that “perhaps for the first time in our history, we are witnessing broad, politically significant rejection of scientific understanding of the earth’s climate, of energy use, of water resources, food and public health.”
Jennifer Lau, a plant biologist and professor at the Kellogg Biological Station, said she was marching because she has been watching as the percentage of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere keeps rising at an ever increasing rate, and the rate of plant and animal extinctions continues to climb.
They marched down Michigan Avenue to Rose Street and turned right to get to Bronson Park to join the Earth Day celebration, chanting as they walked.
