ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM, July 31, 2024) – A Tuesday evening incident in Mecosta County highlighted the risks when a golf cart is on a roadway instead of a fairway.
According to the sheriff’s department there, a 17-year-old girl visiting from Colorado had to be airlifted to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids when the golf cart she was riding in was sideswiped by a motor vehicle in the Canadian Lakes vicinity. The driver of the golf cart and two other passengers were also injured, although less severely, while the motorist in the motor vehicle drove off and was at large as of Wednesday.
Are golf carts legal to drive on roads and streets? Allegan County Sheriff Frank Baker had this answer.
A good rule of thumb for those on golf carts and those needing to drive around them on the roadway is to consider those carts as bicycles or Amish buggies.
The Mecosta County incident remains under investigation.
