KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – While most school students continue to enjoy their summer vacation, school personnel are busy planning for the day they are back in class.
Last night, Kalamazoo Public School trustees ratified an agreement with their administrator’s union, and superintendent Darrin Slade announced a new disciplinary measure for this fall. They will be setting up a separate classroom for elementary students with serious behavior problems.
He says its something that teachers have been asking for.
The classroom will be limited to 15 students, and be staffed with two teachers and two paraprofessionals giving them intensive attention.
They are currently seeking applicants to work in that program, as well as a new truant officer who will be working with students who have high absentee numbers and their families.
Dr. Slade also announced that Woods Lake Elementary students will be returning to their school after a year of remodeling, and that they are hiring new teachers to fill vacancies across the district.
In Kalamazoo, fall term begins August 26th, just over a month away.
