BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM/FM) — A 27-year-old Battle Creek man could spend the next eight years in prison after being convicted on two counts of dogfighting.
A jury also found Javaan James guilty on a count of owning dog fighting equipment and not guilty on two other dog fighting charges.
He could get up to eight years when he is sentenced June 16 because of his prior criminal convictions.
The judge immediately revoked his bond and ordered him held in the Calhoun County Jail until then.
James testified that the five pit bulls seized at his home in Battle Creek were “show dogs.”
Pictures of the animals showed during the trial depicted battered, bitten and infected dogs, one of which had two black eyes.
