BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM/FM) — A proposal is under consideration that would move city commission elections in Battle Creek to even years.
City Clerk Victoria Houser says breaking the odd-year election cycle would have two benefits.
“Cost savings, which are about $30,000,” Houser said. “Also, we’re hoping to see more voter participation.”
She says more people would likely vote for city commission candidates if they’re on the same ballot as state, congressional, and presidential candidates. She came to that conclusion after polling clerks in other cities that have made the move.
If approved, commission candidates would be running for three-year terms this fall.
A public hearing will take place during the commission’s May 16 meeting. A vote on a resolution will follow.
