PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Because there are no free municipal fireworks displays in Kalamazoo and Portage, residents may be blasting off their own pyrotechnics this week.
Both cities have restrictions on when and where they can be fired off.
Portage says not everyone likes fireworks, including folks with dogs or who have experienced trauma. They suggest having a fire extinguisher handy, let your neighbors know what you have planned, and consider alternative ways to celebrate.
City council member Chris Burns
Local ordinances mandate that fireworks shows must be done on private property and be restricted to between 11 a.m. and 11:45 p.m. all this week through Friday night this year.
State law permits up to a $1,000 fine for violation of the rules.
Other communities may also have restrictions on the books, and it would be a good idea to check as part of your holiday planning.
