BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM/FM) — Battle Creek’s historic Fire Station 3 has been evacuated and a crew will start work Monday to clear asbestos dust and contamination from the building.
Work crews were installing a new heating and cooling system in the 115-year-old building on Cliff Street last week when they unintentionally exposed themselves and fire crews to the asbestos after drilling and cutting holes in the ceiling.
Fire crews that normally work out of Station 3 have been transferred to work out of Station #1 on East Michigan Avenue and will cover the Post-Franklin neighborhood from there.
They hope, once test results on air and other samples show the dust has been removed, to reopen the station before the end of the week.
