KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Organizers are hoping for a big turn-out from the southwest Michigan cycling community for the eight-mile Kalamazoo County Ride of Silence, which is set for Wednesday.
Similar events will be taking place across the country this month. Wednesday’s ride, however, carries added significance in Kalamazoo County. Just 11 months ago, a pickup driver, allegedly while under the influence of controlled substances, ran over an organized group of cyclists in Cooper Township, killing five and injuring four others.
“We’ll probably be riding two-abreast at a pace that gets attention,” Paul Selden, the director of road safety for the Kalamazoo Bicycle Club, said Monday. “It’s meant to do just that, because we want to honor cyclists who have been injured or killed.”
Registration at Millennium Park in Portage starts at 6:30 p.m. The ride will start at 7 p.m.
Selden says participants must wear a helmet. Lights are recommended. More information can be found here.
