COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A beach in Kalamazoo County’s Comstock Township is temporarily closed after testing last week revealed higher than acceptable levels of E. coli in the water.
According to Comstock Township Parks and Recreation, samples collected Thursday from Campbell Lake Beach at Robert Morris Park showed E. coli levels that exceeded the total body contact standard.
E. coli levels were 320.15 per 100 mL, while the standard is 300 per 100 mL, the department says.
As a result, health officials say the beach has been closed “out of an abundance of caution.” Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services is encouraging the public to avoid total body contact with the water.
More samples will be collected Monday, with results likely available Tuesday.
If the samples meet the water quality standards, then the beach will reopen.
