KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Sunday night’s surprise storm put Kalamazoo city crews to the test.
Utilities director Jim Baker says the hard rain temporary flooded Portage Creek and the Crosstown Parkway ponds and nearby roads during the morning drive, but receded by midmorning.
Baker says Burdick, Lovers Lane and Pratt were still closed last evening, because they can’t remove the trees until Consumers Energy turns off the juice.
He says with all the roads blocked by construction, it made a difficult situation worse.
Baker says they lost power at three water pumping stations, but there is enough redundancy in the system that it shouldn’t be a problem, for now.
He says house fires could put a strain on their supply rapidly.
About 8,000 homes lost power due to high winds taking out trees and power lines with some still in the dark this morning, and some of them may not have power restored until this afternoon.
