KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — A new report from the Brennan Center for Justice says the difference between a Republican Majority in the current Congress and parity between the parties may be extreme partisan bias in the drafting of congressional districts 8 years ago.
They say it accounts for 16 to 17 of the seats now held by the GOP in seven swing states alone, including Michigan.
A group called Voters not Politicians held a forum in Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon to talk about the issue.
State Representative Jon Hoadley says he has proposed legislation that would create a non-partisan citizens panel that would do the redistricting, and not the party in power.
He says he is trying to get a committee hearing on the bill.
It is already unconstitutional to discriminate against minority groups when redistricting takes place.
The U.S. Supreme Court may consider a similar challenge out of Wisconsin of allegations that there has been bias in the drafting of congressional boundaries, favoring one party over another. The plaintiffs in that suit want that declared unconstitutional also.
