KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County commissioners will consider kicking off local planning for the 250th anniversary celebration of the Declaration of Independence next year.
It will be the nation’s semi-quin-centennial.
It comes at the urging of the state’s America 250 Michigan Commission, already set up by the governor.
Commissioners will review language Tuesday that would authorize the next step, to establish a committee to coordinate local efforts.
Sharon Carlson, who sits on the state commission says their aim is to have events all year.
She says establishment of a local committee could mean logistical support from the state and perhaps some funding.
Local resident Elizabeth Kratz says coordination will ensure a more meaningful celebration.
If the proposal passes muster, it will be put on a future agenda.
