KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools trustees got a preliminary look at their budget for the next school year at last night’s meeting.
They may have to approve it not knowing how much money they will be getting. The state Legislature has yet to approve their appropriation, and state funding constitutes 89% of what the district receives.
Superintendent Darrin Slade says they are better off than most districts because of decisions made by the board before he was hired.
He says they plan to add teachers, behavior specialists, even a full-time truancy officer to respond to parental and staff concerns.
Final approval is scheduled for their next meeting on the 27th.
By law, all school districts must have their final budgets in Lansing on July 1st, the beginning of the fiscal year for schools.
