KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Dr. John Dunn, the current president of Western Michigan University, got a surprise retirement present Saturday night at the second-annual Imagine Gala at the Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine.
A scholarship for medical students was named for Dunn, who is considered the founder of the new medical school.
The goal among contributors to the school was to raise $1.2 million to create a permanent endowment fund that would generate money into the future. They ended up raising $2.2 million.
Dunn told the crowd he was overwhelmed by the gift.
WMU Trustee William D. Johnston said it had been “a fabulous journey and it has inspired many within the city of Kalamazoo, within our Western Michigan University community, within Southwest Michigan, and that inspiration is part of the aspirational gift that John Dunn has given to each and every one of us, to all of the students, to all of the possibilities there are for all of us in the future.”
The endowment, if carefully invested, should raise about $100,000 annually for the John M. Dunn Endowed Scholarship.
