LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Supporters of a proposal to expand the state’s civil rights law to include gays and transgender residents say the legislation’s time has come. At least they hope so.
The bill was reintroduced once again Tuesday in Lansing by a coalition of Democrats who say it has 68% support from the public.
A recent poll shows that even most Republicans and Tea Party members support adding the LGBT community to the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights act.
Kalamazoo Rep. Jon Hoadley says major corporations are also on their side on this one.
The only people they can’t seem to get on board are Republican lawmakers, but supporters say when they see it may be impossible to win an election if this becomes a wedge issue, even they may change their minds.
