CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A 39-year-old man who was being detained at the Calhoun County Jail by the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement has died after he tried to commit suicide at the jail.
39-year-old Hugo Boror Urla was pronounced dead this past Wednesday at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release that on May 12, 2024 at about 2:44 a.m., Corrections Deputies performed a standard wellbeing check and found Urla trying to commit suicide.
Deputies began performing CPR immediately. Jail medical staff continued lifesaving measures until LifeCare Ambulance took him to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital.
The Sheriff’s Department says an official cause of death is pending and an autopsy will be performed by the Calhoun County Medical Examiner.
The death is being investigated by the Michigan State Police as an outside agency, which is protocol for situations like this.
