KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Public Safety has issued an advisory that they are seeing an uptick of car thefts at gas stations and other businesses because drivers are leaving their keys in the ignition.
Folks run in to pay for gas, or do some quick shopping, maybe pick up dry cleaning. Captain Vernon Coakley says people are coming back out and their cars are gone.
An unattended vehicle with the engine running is a crime of opportunity that some cannot resist.
They are reminding motorists to shut off the engine, take the keys and lock the vehicle if there is anything inside they want to keep.
