KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Without discussion or explanation, the Kalamazoo County board has set in motion a possible change of who is in charge when disaster strikes.
It comes as many are struggling to recover from the May 7th tornado, the worst natural disaster to hit the county in decades.
Following two extended closed-door sessions, the board voted to authorize County Administrator Kevin Catlin to draft a transition plan to move the Emergency Management Department to his office. It is currently a part of the Sheriff’s Department.
Chair Tami Rae made the motion.
Vice Chair John Taylor suggested that several options were reviewed during the closed session.
Apparently, the tornado has revealed cracks in their current set up.
Commissioner Jen Strebs singled out Sheriff Rick Fuller for his efforts in the last two weeks, adding that disasters may become more frequent in the future.
We have submitted a request for an explanation on why the change is being considered, but haven’t gotten a response.
