KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan economy is still heavily reliant on the auto industry for its health.
West Michigan Industrial economist Brian Long says despite concerns about decreasing auto sales, it has not yet impacted the West Michigan Economy…but he says it could have some impact later this summer.
New car inventories on dealer lots have swollen to 90 days, well above the preferred 60 day level.
Dr. Long says this July and August could see the reintroduction of the extended “model changeover” which could shut down assembly plants for up to three weeks.
That would have a negative ripple effect on production at west Michigan auto parts plants.
Dr. Long says the business furniture industry however remains strong.
