KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – This has been declared Period Poverty Awareness Week by the Kalamazoo city commission to encourage people to donate to a local charity that supplies menstrual products to the needy.
National studies show 2 in 5 women struggle to afford them, and 1 in 3 miss work or school because they can’t get them.
Sarah Kessler with Care Collective of S.W. Michigan says it’s a real necessity that they have set out to address.
She says it can be a difficult subject, that’s why they asked for the city proclamation.
They regularly distribute items at schools, community events and other places where young and low-income women gather.
