BATTLE CREEK (WKZO AM/FM) — A preliminary hearing has begun in a disturbing child abuse case in Battle Creek.
When Doctors first examined 4-year-old Maloyd Gaines, he was in such rough shape that they didn’t think he would survive.
The autistic boy was covered in scrapes and bruises, was severely malnourished and a lot of his hair was missing.
He was transferred in critical condition to Bronson Methodist in Kalamazoo, where he has been recovering.
His mother, Megan Schrug and her live-in boyfriend, Isaac Miller were charged with first degree child abuse.
Testimony during the first day of her preliminary hearing Tuesday revealed that the boy was repeatedly starved and beaten as punishment and locked in a closet overnight.
They determined his hair had been ripped out by his older sister during staged fights.
Miller is going through the process separately.
Schrug will be back in court later this month for day two of her hearing.
