KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – An effort to get employers, employees, and residents to embrace practical cycling for their daily journeys has kicked off in Kalamazoo.
The Kalamazoo Commuter Challenge runs through May 30 and is organized by local businesses and bicycling groups, they say with the aim to foster regular cycling habits and enrich community life.
The Kalamazoo Commuter Challenge is tied into National Bike to Work Day May 17. Local organizers say they encourage everyone from those new to cycling to experienced cyclists- to incorporate practical cycling into various aspects of their lives when commuting, running errands, dining out, and enjoying leisure activities.
“Riding a bike is a fun, healthy activity for me and my wife. What I have found is it connects me to the spaces I ride through much more than in a car. I think it is exciting to see more cycling happening throughout our community and the Kalamazoo Commuter Challenge will help encourage more cycling,” says Chris Lampen-Crowell, co-owner Gazelle Sports
Residents of all ages and backgrounds are invited to register for the free Challenge online through the Love to Ride Kalamazoo County webpage. Participants may register as individuals or join a team from their organization or workplace.
Teams from organizations will compete against other like-sized organizations in the Kalamazoo Commuter Challenge. With every cycling trip logged on Love to Ride, participants will have opportunities to climb leaderboards and win prizes.
