THREE RIVERS (WKZO AM/FM) — Divers in St. Joseph County have recovered the body of a woman who drowned in Clear Lake late Saturday afternoon.
The woman has been identified as 24-year-old Alison Kunz of Saline, which is near Ann Arbor.
She was with a group of people on board a pontoon boat. Sheriff’s deputies say she fell or jumped from the boat for a swim. Those on board did not realize she was missing until about 5:30 p.m.
Divers were deployed and a helicopter began a search effort, but the murky water and heavily overgrown vegetation hampered the search, Saturday night and Sunday morning when the county dive team resumed the search.
Soon after, they brought a side-scan sonar device to the scene at 12:30 p.m. Searchers found her body in about 15 feet of water near the spot where the boat had been floating. St. Joseph County Sheriff’s investigators are calling it an accidental drowning but a post mortem will be conducted to determine if any other factors contributed to the death.
Clear Lake is among a cluster of lakes located west of Three Rivers in St. Joseph County.
