KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo Humane Society has kicked off a fundraiser for a brand new facility.
Director Aaron Winters said their aim is to compliment and mesh with the county’s new animal control shelter in the design stage. They hope to provide the spaying and neutering, veterinary and a few other services to the pet owning community, particularly the low-income community, that the county can’t provide.
At a news conference downtown, Winters noted that they have been working out of a converted bridal shop for years. Their services have expanded to a 12-county area. He said he facility just isn’t big enough anymore.
They have secured a 15-acre parcel along the Interstate 94 business loop just east of the intersection with Sprinkle Road and they plan to build a new facility, designed just for their purposes, that is four times larger than their current facility.
Campaign co-chairperson Colleen Killen-Roberts said their goal is to raise $4.7 million. They have already raised $3 million through the quiet campaign and are opening the campaign to the public to push it to the top.
