You’d have to go back to September 2013 to find conditions nationwide as dry as they are today. That’s the conclusion of USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey. At the start of this month drought coverage was listed at 45 percent which is a two percent increase from late September. He says the core of the dryness is in the western part of the country where at least three-quarters of the land has remained in drought for six weeks in a row. And the dryness has been moving eastward toward row crop regions. The situation has helped move along harvest in Michigan and Corn Belt states. For us, well over half the corn is in and less than 20 percent of soybeans remain to be harvested.
