WASHINGTON D.C. (WKZO-AM/FM) — The family of former Western Michigan University student and Michigan native Matt Mika has issued a statement, saying he is expected to make a full recovery after he was shot several times by a gunman who was aiming at Republicans practicing baseball for a charity game last Wednesday in Alexandria, Va.
The announcement followed additional surgery that was required to repair the damage done by bullets that hit his chest and arm and punctured a lung last Wednesday. He was taken to George Washington University Hospital in critical condition, and upgraded to serious after the first round of surgery.
His family said he was “lucky to be alive” after the shooting incident that also wounded four others.
Congressman Steve Scalise has been upgraded to serious from critical. A congressional Aide and a capitol police officer were less seriously wounded.
Mika is currently a lobbyist for Tyson Foods, after serving for years as an aide for legislators both in Lansing and in Washington. It was his proficiency at baseball that brought him back to the Republican practice to help some of the Congressmen sharpen their skills.
Mika is expected to remain in intensive care through the weekend.
