KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — The Michigan Department of Transportation says it will be lifting work zone restrictions at the majority of its project sites statewide over the Independence Day weekend.
That means smoother driving on Interstate 94 through southwest Michigan. However, MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa says motorists will still need to be aware of a few lane shifts.
“Two eastbound lanes are shifted between Hennessey Road and the Van Buren County line in Berrien County,” Schirripa said. “Same thing between exits 16 and 23.”
There’s also a traffic shift at the I-94 bridge reconstruction site over the Paw Paw River in Van Buren County.
“Maybe plan on a couple extra minutes of travel time, but there’s certainly not a huge impact,” Schirripa said.
Elsewhere, M-99 in Albion will remain closed and detoured. One lane is open and a temporary traffic signal has been installed on U.S. 12 in Three Oaks.
Work will be suspended at 3 p.m. Friday. It will resume Wednesday morning, Schirripa said.
Statewide, lane restrictions will be lifted on nearly 75 percent of MDOT projects through the holiday.
