BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM/FM) — A 47-year-old from Battle Creek, who Michigan State Police say broke into an ex-girlfriend’s home on J Drive in Marshall Township, is in the trauma unit at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo after a high-speed chase that ended in a shoot-out.
Troopers believe he broke into the home to retrieve property he left there, including guns. After the homeowners struggled with the suspect, during which a shot was fired into the ceiling, he fled.
The victims were able to give police the suspect’s name and a good description of his van. The suspect was spotted a short time later near the Emmett Street Bridge in Battle Creek and chased to Elm and Van Buren, where he suddenly pulled over and left the van firing shots at the officers from a long gun.
Calhoun County Sheriff’s deputies and troopers returned fire and struck the Battle Creek man in the hip and chest. They are calling the wounds non-life threatening. Authorities estimate the suspect got off seven shots and the officers responded with nearly four-dozen rounds fired from their service pistols.
The officers were not hit by the gunfire.
A review of the shooting is underway.
