KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County has about a million dollars in federal COVID-19 funds it didn’t expect to have available, because two groups didn’t spend it.
The county board is set to rescind a small allocation to the Child Abuse and Neglect Council and a much larger one to Trauma Recovery Associates because they weren’t able to use the money for the goal they set out.
Administrator Kevin Catlin says the first never went through with the paperwork, and the second had staffing issues.
At least two commissioners have very different ideas on how it could still be spent.
Vice chair John Taylor says they should keep the money in house to enhance county operations.
Commissioner Monteze Morales thinks it should be spent in the community.
The county board is expected to formally rescind both grants Tuesday night at their regular meeting.
The board has until the end of this year to allocate the pandemic relief money, under the federal guidelines. A date to discuss reallocation of the funding hasn’t been set.
