BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – Battle Creek Police have a suspect in custody after a traffic stop on Friday turned into a police chase which led to a brief lockdown at a nearby elementary school.
Battle Creek Police say two officers tried to make a traffic stop near the intersection of Oak and High Streets in the central part of the city shortly after 12:30 p.m..
The vehicle continued to drive before turning into a nearby driveway and crashing into a detached garage.
The suspect driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and was said to be in possession of a gun, as a gunshot was heard from inside the vehicle during the crash.
Police advised Post-Franklin Elementary to immediately go into lockdown, due to the school’s proximity to the incident.
The suspect tried to make a run for it but officers were able to apprehend and take the suspect into custody, as well as recover the handgun from this incident.
Post-Franklin Elementary was told that the lockdown could be lifted following the suspect’s apprehension.
The investigation into the incident is continuing. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department and Emmett Township Police provided assistance.
