KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A group of parents concerned about the emissions coming from Kalamazoo’s Graphic Packaging International plant, and how it impacts schools nearby, have taken matters into their own hands.
Mary Andrew with Kalamazoo Parents for Clean Air says the danger is real.
She says there are eight schools in the district within two miles of the plant, the distance the World Health Organization considers unsafe, if a firm is emitting pollutants.
Andrew says their group asked months ago that the district install air monitors at those schools, which has not happened.
She announced at the Kalamazoo Public Schools board meeting Thursday that they would like to have the air monitor installed at Lincoln Elementary, the school closest to the paperboard recycling plant.
