CASS COUNTY (WKZO-AM/FM) — A man from Gobles who was hit by his own personal watercraft has been declared dead.
Witnesses say 28-year-old Derek Jackson hit a wave the wrong way in the northeast corner of Magician Lake in Cass County around 5 p.m. on July 4 and was thrown into the water.
Cass County Sheriff’s deputies say the watercraft then struck him.
He was airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital by Medflight, where he was pronounced dead.
The medical examiner says being struck didn’t kill him. Drowning was listed as the cause of death. Jackson was wearing a life jacket and alcohol was not a factor.
It remains under investigation.
