A look at the big picture weather wise for crop year 2020 comes to us from Eric Anderson with the MSU Extension. It was a much warmer than normal summer over southwest Michigan which helped accelerate crop development. For the period 1895 to this year the average temperature in July was the sixth warmest while minimum readings in the May through July timeframe ranked 13th warmest. Most of the season was drier than normal with a couple of incidents of timely rainfall coming in August and September which helped produce respectable yields. Most of last month was dry enough to allow an early harvest window. Conditions in early November should mean things will be wrapped up before the worst of winter arrives.
