KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — It’s going to be hot and muggy, with a heat index that could be in the low 90s in parts of southern Michigan on Thursday.
That may be enough to make the average person uncomfortable. For heart patients, it can be downright stressful.
Cardiologist Jessica Williams at Borgess Heart Center in Kalamazoo says many of their cardiac patients complain of symptoms when the heat gets turned up because their heart rate goes up trying to cool the body down.
She said it’s important that patients watch their fluids. Many take medications that reduce their ability to retain liquids and that can lead to dehydration.
Williams said she has never actually prescribed air conditioning, but says its doctor recommended during the hottest parts of days like today.
