SOUTH HAVEN (WKZO-AM/FM) — The restoration of the iconic lighthouse on the pier at South Beach in South Haven has been a labor of love that culminated last night when the community rededicated the structure.
The 114-year-old tower became surplus government property a few years ago as ships now navigate using GPS and there was no need to maintain the system of light houses that ring Lake Michigan.
They sold it to the South Haven Historical Society for a dollar, on the promise that they would raise money to restore and maintain it.
The group managed to raise over $300,000 through grants and local donations, and have since had the steel structure completely refurbished.
They celebrated the completion of the work with Wednesday night’s rededication.
