KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Another Kalamazoo restaurant is closing its doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
MLive confirmed Wednesday that the downtown establishment Union Cabaret and Grille closed for good this week. The restaurant and music entertainment venue had been operating in Kalamazoo for the last 18 years under the Millennium Restaurant Group.
Bob Lewis of Millennium told MLive that the closure came from economic uncertainty under the pandemic, adding that it was not possible to host live bands due to capacity rules under the pandemic.
However, the employees at Cabaret will be offered new positions at other restaurants owned by Millennium that are still operating.
In the city of Kalamazoo, those establishments include 600 Kitchen and Bar, Central City Tap House, Martell’s and the Wine Loft. Central City Tap House and the Wine Loft are temporarily closed at this time, but Lewis told MLive that many employees are expected to take new jobs at Central City Tap House once it reopens, which is slated for the end of November.
In Portage, other restaurants owned by Millennium include Centre Street Tap House, Fieldstone Grill and the Cove Lakeside and Bistro.
This is only the latest Kalamazoo-area restaurant to close due to the pandemic.
In September, Tibbs Brewing Company announced that it would be closing for good after a final day of business in early October.
In June, local breakfast eatery Station 702 announced that it would be closing its doors. Prior to that, both the Kalamazoo location of Moe’s Southwest Grill and the Bravo! restaurant in Portage announced closures for similar reasons.
