COLDWATER, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – Three persons have been arrested following an investigation by the Michigan State Police and the Lakeland Correctional Facility into the smuggling of drugs into the Coldwater prison through the mail.
State Police say the incident started in May of 2023 when the prison received a book addressed to a prisoner at the Lakeland prison.
When the book was inspected, drugs were found concealed inside. Court records indicate the drug suboxone was contained in ten orange sublingual strips within the pages.
The investigation led authorities to a Michigan Department of Corrections parolee in the Detroit area and his 37-year-old sister along with the prisoner who was allegedly intended to receive the drugs.
Arrested were Lakeland prisoner 38-year-old Brandon Head and 38-year-old parolee Antwuan Jefferson. Both have already been arraigned and their cases are in the Branch County courts.
Lakiesha Marie Jefferson was arrested on Monday with the assistance of the Michigan State Police 2nd District Fugitive team.
She was arraigned Tuesday in the Branch County District Court on a charge of conspiracy to bring suboxone into a prison.
The investigation also included the MDOC Intelligence unit, the United States Postal Inspector’s office, the Michigan State Police multi-jurisdictional narcotics unit C.O.M.E.T., the Michigan State Police 2nd District Computer Crimes unit, as well as the Michigan State Police crime lab in Lansing.
