KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – An eighth grade student at Milwood Magnet School will be representing the area at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.
13-year-old Carter Tuthill won the Kalamazoo County Regional Spelling Bee at the Chenery Auditorium in Kalamazoo this past Saturday, and his winning word was “linguistics.”
Tuthill almost didn’t make the event. He was the second runner up at his school’s spell-off, but the school decided to send him to the regional competition anyway.
All schools in the county were invited to participate, though only 17 schools within the Kalamazoo Public Schools district opted to do so.
“Bee Week” will take place from Sunday, May 26, to Friday, May 31. The National Competition will begin with the Preliminaries Tuesday, May 28 and conclude with the Finals Thursday, May 30.
It will take place take place at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C.
