COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A suspect who police say was stealing mail out of mailboxes in Comstock Township is in custody after fleeing from Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office deputies early Friday.
The department says around 1:40 a.m. deputies were dispatched to the area of East H Avenue and North 30th Street for the report of mail theft. Deputies located the suspect vehicle, which fled upon seeing law enforcement. They say the vehicle the suspect was driving was stolen from the Oshtemo area less than 24 hours earlier.
Deputies pursued the vehicle as it continued to flee, but the suspect collided with a utility pole in the 9000 block of East Michigan Avenue. The driver fled the vehicle on foot and attempted to discard a baggie of suspected methamphetamine. The driver was taken into custody and the suspected drugs were seized by deputies.
When they searched the vehicle, deputies located mail from various addresses in Kalamazoo and Calhoun County.
They says the suspect had local warrants for charges including vehicle theft and resisting an officer, with additional warrants issued by the Battle Creek Police Department for aggravated assault and drug related activity.
The suspect was arrested and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
