KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools officials gave a report on school security to trustees, as the trial of James Crumbley in Pontiac for his son’s Oxford High School shooting has gotten underway and spring is just ahead.
Rikki Saunders, the director of special education and support services, says they have been training staff to be prepared to handle everything, and they think they are.
That can mean anything from worst case scenarios, to disputes between students to weather emergencies to broken water mains.
District security chief Don Webster says most security issues are dealt with by trained teams located at each school.
He says they go through a federally approved procedure to evaluate the seriousness of threats of all kinds.
They say the primary goal is to create schools where students feel safe so they can focus on learning.
