UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) — President Trump’s latest tweets announcing a ban on transgender service personnel has sparked demonstrations and negative reactions across the nation.
Jay Maddock The director of Outfront Kalamazoo says that it shows hate and disrespect for people who want to serve their country.
Jen Judd with ProKzoo says it’s not what Trump promised during his campaign and certainly shows his true colors.
The announcement also apparently caught the Pentagon off guard, and just about everyone else. A tweet does not make it the law, and already most of the reasons given for the order by the President are being shot down as inaccurate.
The Lawyers at WMU’s Cooley Law School issued a statement suggesting that if the President does attempt to execute his tweet, it will result in legal challenges.
“The Supreme Court has yet to speak on whether the Constitution’s equal protection clause provides heightened protection for transgender individuals. President Trump’s recent announcement that transgender individuals will be prohibited from serving in the armed forces may ultimately force the Court to consider this important, but divisive, issue.”
Stephanie White is executive director of the advocacy group Equality Michigan, and also served five years in the U-S Army as a commander in the Second Infantry Division.
White says Trumps claims that Transgender soldiers drive up medical costs and are disruptive is just his way of masking discrimination.
White says any member of the L-G-B-T-Q community, military or otherwise, who feels threatened should contact Equality Michigan, where staff members can help connect people with medical, legal and other resources.
