PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Portage Public Schools will no longer hold any major school events on religious holidays.
The school board approved the change Wednesday night after reaching a settlement in a civil lawsuit filed by a Jewish student over the 2023 graduation date for Portage Northern High School.
PPS will create and maintain a religious holiday calendar including religious minority holidays for the entire district that will be on the website. Students will be allowed to miss class if they take part in a religious observance.
The events that will not be scheduled during religious holidays are all school dances and all school celebrations; graduation and award ceremonies; tryouts for athletics; musical and other competitive teams; parent-teacher conferences and open houses; student council elections; and elementary field trips.
