KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A new Kalamazoo rideshare service hopes to decrease carbon emissions, but also increase transportation accessibility.
The Creamery, a mixed-income apartment complex in Kalamazoo’s Edison neighborhood, will be the home base for the car-sharing program.
People who sign up and are approved can borrow an electric vehicle for as little as $5 per hour.
Matt Hollander from Hollander Development, the owners of the apartment complex, says the program is meant to be economical and environmentally friendly. Anyone 21 and older can use the cars once they’ve gone through an approval process, background check, and an orientation.
The Affordable Mobility Program is a partnership with the nonprofit organization Forth. The program was launched by the Michigan Clean Cities Coalition and aims to help with transportation while saving money and the environment.
The project is supported in part by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Office.
Another Hollander Development property, Spring Manor Apartments in Portage, will also have a car to share.
