KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — A ballot request for a senior millage in Kalamazoo County has been put off until next May.
There had been a push to put it on the ballot this November, but i has been decided they need more time to examine the idea, get the community involved in the process and make sure they have their proposal completely fleshed out.
Commissioner Mike Quinn made the original motion two weeks ago and the request to delay at this week’s regular meeting.
One issue to be resolved is how much to ask for. The County’s advisory board on Elder Care recommended a .425-mill request. County Health Director Jim Rutherford came back with a .3 mill hike.
Commissioner Mike Seals suggested they ask for the higher amount but only assess what they really need, which is what they have done with the Law Enforcement millage for decades. They have only rarely had to assess the full amount.
The commission has to decide whether they will appoint a task force to do the assessment or rely on staff. That will be an agenda item for a future meeting.
